Description

The Manager of Immunobiology Research provides scientific expertise and oversight for histocompatibility, immunogenetics, clinical trials, and related research projects within the NMDP/CIBMTR/BMT CTN.  Develops technical and operational objectives for the collection and storage of research samples, and for laboratories performing clinical and research testing under subcontract to the NMDP.  Seeks qualified organizations to provide central pharmacy and laboratory testing services to meet the needs of the NMDP/CIBMTR/BMT CTN.  Provides scientific support to the NMDP/CIBMTR/BMT CTN network and directly participates in committees as required.  Serves as Manager to Immunobiology Research Scientists at all levels.

ACCOUNTABILITIES 

•    Develops and manages NMDP/CIBMTR/BMT CTN-initiated histocompatibility, immunobiologic and immunogenetic projects related to the collection, processing
     and repository storage of clinical specimens; ensures scientific program or protocol-specific objectives or goals are met. 
•    Provides key input for program advancement and develops roadmaps with milestones and delivery metrics.
•    Writes general and technical reports, scientific abstracts, manuscripts and presentations for government, BMT CTN committee, CIBMTR and NMDP board of
     director deliverables.  
•    Oversees the vendor selection process for contract laboratories and central pharmacies needed to support the clinical trial and research testing programs of the
     NMDP/CIBMTR/BMT CTN and manages all selected laboratories to ensure contract deliverables are met. 
•    Leads the implementation, execution, and completion of initiatives related to the collection of samples for protocol-related research testing, for long-term
     repository storage, and related research. 
•    Ensures regulatory compliance and quality control for activities and procedures; oversees protocol development as needed.
•    Hires, trains, supervises, coaches, and evaluates the performance of assigned staff. 
•    Establishes and maintains a productive and positive work environment.
•    Other duties as assigned.


Requirements

Knowledge of:
 
•    Comprehensive science foundation which includes basic immunology, molecular biology and associated laboratory testing methodologies.  
•    Knowledge and experience in a scientific environment requiring compliance with human research subject protection guidelines, and data
     confidentiality standards. 
 
 
Ability to:

•    Communicate clearly and effectively to staff, leaders and stakeholders through oral, visual, and written formats.  
•    Mentor direct reports and coordinate plans across teams.
•    Project needs and optimize time and resources effectively to complete target objectives.
•    Proactively identify and communicate risks and mitigation strategies, raise issues early, and innovate on improvement strategies.
•    Commit to occasional overnight travel.
 

Education and/or Experience:

•    Bachelor’s degree in biological or medical field and ten years of experience or Master’s degree and eight years of experience.  
•    Five years extensive experience in a scientific lead position that required multi-faceted project management and direction of teams.  Two years in a leadership role
     with supervision of direct reports.
•    Demonstrated ability and success in managing scientific projects requiring intradepartmental and intra-agency collaboration. Documented experience in scientific
     data analysis, business and scientific technical writing, and the presentation of research data.
 
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

•    Transplantation research and clinical trial network experience.
•    Vendor interaction and negotiation experience.
•    Course work or specific training in immunology and/or histocompatibility
•    Related Masters or Doctoral degree
